Momma’s Cure for Seasonal Allergies

 By Jessica Gean

In the South, we get all four seasons, sometimes in the same week. We get sunny springs, hot and humid summers, colorful falls, and some cold and icy winters. Change is constant. But one thing that doesn’t seem to change year-round is allergies! Like most, my allergies are at their worst in the springtime, when the flowers are blooming and the grass is growing again; and if your truck is outside for more than 5 minutes, it turns into a tennis ball from all the pollen in the air! I don’t know about you, but I can just look at the flowers and start sneezing. But, like most problems, Momma has an answer to fix it.

When I came home from elementary school one afternoon, eyes red from scratching, nose sore from sneezing, and my voice an octave lower from coughing all day, Momma had to bring out the ‘big guns’ …called “Honey”. But not just any honey. It was the honey from the farmers’ market we went to each week. She told me to “take a big spoonful of honey every morning ‘fore school to help my allergies”. After all, it was easier to remember to eat some sweet honey rather than a generic allergy pill that no child wants to take in the mornin’. After a few days, I could already tell I was feeling better.

I started deep diving into the world of honey to find out why something that tasted so good could help so much! First, I wanted to know why momma was adamant that the honey came from the farm down the street, and I learned that only the local honey can help you with the allergies. Local honey is raw unprocessed honey made close to where you live, or the surrounding area. The idea is that when you ingest pollen, in a healthy way, your body becomes less sensitive to the pollen, so you experience fewer allergy symptoms! Well, I was still a little skeptical because there are always “side effects” for everything, but all the “side effects” I found were amazing health benefits.

The local raw honey is rich with antioxidants that have been linked to reducing heart attacks, strokes, and some cancers. Those same antioxidants have helped lower blood pressure and improve cholesterol! A huge benefit I found is that honey promotes eye health too! There are countless benefits for local honey, but the most surprising benefit I saw is that honey heals burns and wounds, and this practice has been used since Ancient Egypt. I cannot wait to try that one this summer with the inevitable sunburns! After learning so much about honey, the most important thing I learned is to never doubt Momma, because she IS always right!
